What is Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation (PBM), uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light that are absorbed by the body at a cellular level.

Unlike ultraviolet (UV) light, which can damage the skin, red and near-infrared wavelengths are non-invasive and have been widely studied for their potential role in supporting cellular function, recovery and overall wellbeing.

Today, red light therapy is used by wellness enthusiasts, athletes, clinics and healthcare professionals around the world as part of their daily recovery and self-care routines.

How Does Red Light Therapy Work?

Every cell in the body contains structures called mitochondria, often referred to as the “powerhouses” of the cell.

Mitochondria are responsible for producing adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which serves as the primary source of cellular energy.

Research suggests that specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light may help support mitochondrial function, potentially improving the body’s ability to produce ATP and maintain normal cellular processes.

This increased cellular energy is believed to play a role in many of the benefits commonly associated with red light therapy.

Step 1 — Light Penetration

→ Red and near-infrared wavelengths penetrate the skin and underlying tissues
"

Step 2 — Mitochondrial Absorption

→ Light is absorbed by mitochondria (cytochrome c oxidase)
"

Step 3 — Increased ATP Production

→ Cellular energy production increases
"

Step 4 — Cellular Response

→ Enhanced repair, regeneration, and signalling processes
"

Step 5 — Observable Effects

→ Improved recovery, skin function, and overall well being

Why Wavelengths Matter

Not all light is the same.

Professional red light therapy systems typically use carefully selected wavelengths that have been extensively studied within photobiomodulation research.

Red Light (630nm–660nm)

Red light primarily interacts with the surface layers of the body and is commonly used in research relating to:

  • Skin appearance and rejuvenation
  • Collagen production
  • General skin wellness
  • Surface-level tissue support

Near-Infrared Light (810nm–850nm)

Near-infrared light penetrates deeper into the body’s tissues and has been studied for its potential role in:

  • Muscle recovery
  • Exercise performance
  • Joint comfort
  • Deep tissue support

Many modern systems combine both red and near-infrared wavelengths to provide comprehensive coverage.

Areas of Ongoing Research

Photobiomodulation continues to be an active area of scientific research.

Studies have explored the potential of red and near-infrared light in relation to:

  • Cellular energy production
  • Recovery and performance
  • Skin health and appearance
  • Exercise recovery
  • General wellbeing and wellness

While research is ongoing, interest in red light therapy continues to grow across both home and professional settings.

Scientific Research & Further Reading

Photobiomodulation (red and near-infrared light therapy) is an active area of scientific research. The studies below explore potential applications of photobiomodulation across a range of health and wellbeing outcomes.

Whole-Body Photobiomodulation and Chronic Pain

Researchers supported by the NHS and Health Research Authority investigated whole-body photobiomodulation therapy in individuals with chronic widespread pain. The feasibility trial found the treatment was well accepted by participants and reported promising effects on pain, fatigue, sleep and wellbeing, supporting the need for larger clinical trials.

Cellular Energy and Photobiomodulation

Research from the University of Birmingham explores how red and near-infrared light may interact with mitochondria, supporting ATP (cellular energy) production and influencing biological processes involved in tissue repair and recovery.

Large-Scale Evidence Reviews

A recent umbrella review assessed evidence from 204 randomised controlled trials involving more than 9,000 participants. The review found photobiomodulation showed beneficial effects for several conditions and outcomes, while also highlighting the need for further high-quality research and standardised treatment protocols.

Whole-Body Photobiomodulation and Fibromyalgia

Randomised clinical trials and feasibility studies investigating whole-body photobiomodulation have reported improvements in pain, quality of life and other wellbeing measures in participants with fibromyalgia. Researchers have concluded that larger studies are warranted to further evaluate these findings.
